An Australian man who jumped into shark-infested waters to “surf” a dead whale’s floating carcass won’t be fined for the stunt, wildlife authorities say. But he’s getting plenty of grief for it at home.
“Mum thinks I’m an idiot,” Harrison Williams told Australia’s 7 News. “Dad’s not too proud, either.”
The 26-year-old was on a boat with friends off the coast of Western Australia when they came across a dead whale.
“One of my mates thought it’d be pretty funny if I surfed the whale,” Williams said. “So I just did it.”
Aerial footage showed Williams jump into the water and climb on top of the rotting whale as several tiger sharks and at least one great white were reportedly feeding on the carcass.
“He was too busy chomping on the whale, so it wasn’t too bad,” Williams said of the great white. His friends later pulled the boat alongside the carcass and Williams jumped to safety.
Australia’s Department of Fisheries denounced Williams’ behavior, but said he won’t be fined because the animal was dead and he didn’t remove any part of it.
The carcass later washed ashore near Perth, forcing the closure of several beaches because of sharks in the area.
